FOCUSBegg & Co
Cashmere scarvesBegg & Co make scarves that are exceedingly lovely inside and out. With their slightly off beat eye for colour and a love of pattern and line, they are the scarf equivalent of The Modern House. And, just like The Modern House, if you can’t afford to buy one, you can rent (around £95 for two weeks).
Cashmere aficionados will be hard pressed to find a lighter, softer, more delicious cloth than Begg & Co’s Wispy scarves, which are made from no less than 8km of the finest yarn from goats in the Alashan region of Inner Mongolia.
Cashmere production has become an overcrowded and industrialised business these days, but as members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, Begg & Co works closely with its suppliers to ensurehigh levels of environmental compliance as well as animal welfare. Founded in 1866 by Alex Begg, the company was originally based in Paisley where it specialised in the paisley scarves that put the town on the map. In 1902, it moved to Ayr, on the south west coast, where the water is soft and plentiful – a key ingredient in the weaving of the finest cashmere for a whole host of luxury brands.
Since 2013, the company has branched out and has been using its hand-crafted traditional techniques to produce scarves and throws under its own label. Its collaborations are also beautifully judged, including their collectable and covetable Artist series, currently by the Scottish ceramicist and illustrator John Booth. beggandcompany.com
